Inside a characterful, English countryside cottage with Laura Stephens

Little Greene

London-based interior designer, Laura Stephens, used a selection of Little Greene paints in her renovation in The Cotswolds, England. Shades from our Stone collection were chosen to harmoniously complement period features.

Originally a barn dating from the mid-seventeenth century, Well Cottage was purchased by Rachel Southern to provide her family with a countryside retreat in the English Cotswolds. She enlisted her friend and established interior designer, Laura Stephens, to breathe some life into the historic property, modernising the cottage while preserving its character for an authentic finish.

Laura found inspiration in the home’s history and beautiful surroundings: “Well Cottage was very much a working cottage, rustic and simple in nature. Both Rachel and I felt it was important to reflect this. We wanted to bring the colours of the surrounding countryside into the cottage. Hence, deep reds, mustards, olive greens and shades of brown and stone were used throughout. All paints were sourced from Little Greene’s Stone Collection.”

The downstairs rooms feature warm neutrals such as Lute and Rolling Fog – Pale, which provide a sense of cosiness and tranquillity. For the large, farmhouse kitchen, Laura grounded the space by contrasting the stone flooring and high ceilings with our deep, earthy red, Arras, on the units. Upstairs, she experimented with colour and pattern, pairing wallpaper inspired by nature with woodwork in Sage Green, Purple Brown and Nether Red. Shades of Portland Stone create a calm backdrop for prints and furnishings.
